ASME BPE is the global standard for bioprocessing, pharmaceutical and high-purity dairy equipment. It goes beyond sanitary tube: it fixes the material (including sulphur range for orbital welding), dimensions and tolerances, a numeric bore roughness (Ra) and how tube is packed and marked. We supply 316L tubing to ASME BPE and ASTM A270 with the pharmaceutical supplement, mechanically polished or electropolished, with matching elbows, tees and clamps on the same OD.

ASME BPE bore finish designations

SF1

mechanically polished, Ra ≤ 0.51 µm (20 µin). The workhorse for pharma and dairy lines.

SF2 and SF3

mechanically polished, Ra ≤ 0.64 and 0.76 µm, for less critical lines.

SF4

mechanically polished then electropolished, Ra ≤ 0.38 µm (15 µin). For WFI and pure steam.

SF5 and SF6

electropolished, Ra ≤ 0.51 and 0.64 µm.

The Ra value is stated on each lot's certificate and can be measured with a profilometer on request.

How ASME BPE differs from ordinary sanitary tube

Material

316L with controlled sulphur of 0.005–0.017% so orbital welds are consistent between heats.

Bore

a guaranteed Ra for each finish grade, not just "polished".

Dimensions

fixed OD and wall with tight tolerances for orbital welding and clamps.

Packing and marking

capped ends, bagged, marked with spec, size, heat number and finish.

Ends and fittings

Butt weld

square-cut ends for orbital welding.

What does ASME BPE stand for?+

Bioprocessing Equipment, published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. It covers materials, dimensions, bore finish, joining and packing for pharma and biotech equipment.

SF1 or SF4?+

SF1 covers most dairy, juice and purified-water lines. SF4 (electropolished) is usually specified for WFI, pure steam and sterile products.

ASME BPE vs ASTM A270?+

ASTM A270 is the sanitary tube product spec; its pharmaceutical supplement adds pharma requirements. ASME BPE is wider, tying tube, fittings, valves, welding and finish into one system. Most pharma projects cite both.
